Post-Civil War train trips from Missouri to California via prairies and deserts. First, gruff Major Adams, then Christopher Hill, Duke Shannon, and Cooper Smith led the journeys. The assistant Bell Hooks, chef Charlie, orphan Barnaby, and swashbuckling Italian Duke appeared in several stories.
