An imprisoned man, Aaron Wallace, becomes a lawyer, defending other inmates while he does his best to drop the charges of his wrongful conviction, especially after he learns that his daughter Jasmine is pregnant.

A clash comes about between Aaron and his black inmates when he accepts to defend a white supremacist in order to repay his debt to inmate Wild Bill. Aaron sues the NYPD, in hopes he could reach the file of his case, but his request is met with rejection.

When Aaron decides to defend an inmate from Warden Safiya Masry's drug rehabilitation program whose brother is an officer, District Attorney Maskins and Assistant District Attorney O'Reilly tighten the noose on Aaron.

In a flashback that takes place nine years ago, Aaron's wife, Marie, suffers as she is forced to face life on her own after Aaron is put under lock and key.

With Aaron defending a cellmate who is accused of theft, he finds himself in a predicament when he can't make up his mind whether to do the right thing or think of his own good. Marie starts to have new hopes for Aaron's case.

Aaron's fight to prove his innocence continues as he comes face-to-face with O'Reilly in court and looks for a warrant that was used in his arrest. Marie's father tries to convince her to give her relationship with Darius a chance. Safiya and Aaron are unaware of what Maskins is preparing for them.

Aaron reconsiders his plans regarding his case as he tries to balance his own demands and those of his cellmates. Safiya goes against the prison board, which threatens her marriage to Anya, Attorney General of New York State.

Aaron agrees to defend Cassius Dawkins, whom Maskins sent to Bellmore to subdue Aaron, when Cassius causes three white supremacists to enter the hospital.

In order to win his own case, Aaron decides to take over the case of inmate Easley Barton against Maskins. Safiya continues to tighten the noose on Captain Foster in his drug-smuggling operations. Marie and Darius's relationship comes to an end because of Aaron.

A look into the past nine years of Aaron's imprisonment, during which he has become a lawyer who fights for the rights of the prisoners, a totally different person than the man he used to be when he first came to prison.

Aaron succeeds in finding new information that'd help him with his case, which makes Cassius doubt that Aaron is seeking vengeance. Before his retirement, Foster feels pressured by Safiya.

Prison warden Cyrus Hunt dashes Aaron's hopes when he finally gets an opportunity to call for the reopening of his case in court. The fallout from Foster's corruption finally comes to an end.

Aaron stands up to Maskins and Cyrus Hunt's attempts to prevent him from having a retrial, as a result of which Aaron confronts a new rival. The elections comes to the crunch, and Safiya realizes that Aaron has become a big shot.
