As Pete meets renowned magician Penn Jillette by coincidence, she challenges his beliefs and motivates him to attempt living carefree for a night.

Pete spends the day with Leif, who inspires him to be accepting of the world. However, their easygoing demeanor quickly turns sour when they run afoul of the police.

Comedian Bill Burr shows sympathy for Pete after he gets dumped by Artie and lends him his guest room. As their odd friendship grows, Bill pushes Pete to embrace his manly side and get tougher.

Pete attempts to be encouraging even if he feels envious when another comedian succeeds. Pete also gets to see Jess again, and she gives him some advice on how to express himself.

Pete and Ali get back together as they take in the funny and alternative comedy scene of New York, visiting many different venues and comedians throughout the course of a single night.

Pete and Ali differ on how to appeal to college audiences while traveling to a comedy conference to obtain college gigs.

Pete tries to show Ali his strength in character by engaging in a comedy-roast war, but he finds it difficult to be mean, and the intense battle brings facts to light and compels him to consider his priorities in life.
