Shozab, the treasurer of Kufa, falls in love with the Jewish woman Homeyra. His Christian wife, Maria, then becomes the focus of the story, amidst a struggle between reason, love, and beliefs. This leads to her madness 20 years later, as the events begin on the Day of Ashura in the year 61 AH.
