As Tom and Louise, a married couple. get ready to attend their first marriage counseling session, they attempt to figure out how they ended up where they are now.

Tom admires his own mettle for arriving late at the session they had last week and vows not to be late again starting this week.

In their third session, Tom and Louise talk about how their marriage has become passionless and ruminate on the question of whether passion is something that can be recovered.

On the day of their fourth session, Tom asks Louise to corroborate a lie he has told their counselor.

When the fifth session does not go well, Tom decides to move out for a while, while Louise believes it could lead to dangerous results.

As Louise shares her thoughts about Tom's efforts, stating that they feel forced, Tom comes to the realization that he must behave in a different way while still being who he is.

As Louise confesses that she is embarrassed by the fact that Tom is jobless, they agree to be more frank with each other.

The eighth session gets Tom and Louise to talk about their past and why they became attracted to each other in the beginning.

As Tom and Louise talk about a point of progress in their relationship, Louise has her reservations, but she asks Tom to return to live at home.

As Tom returns to live at home, he feels that his and Louise's problems are over, but then they try to find the right label that defines their relationship after they realize that they wouldn't be friends if they weren't together.
