As NASA prepares to assemble a team of the country's best test pilots to be the first men to go to space, only seven pilots get selected, as they're referred to as the Mercury Seven.

As the Mercury Seven get introduced to the public to secure funding from Congress, the team and their families try to adjust to their newfound fame, while they get to enjoy all the perks that come with it.

As Shepard and Glenn continue to butt heads to prove that each one is better than the other, the Seven witness a prototype of the Mercury that explodes during launch.

As NASA faces pressure to prove its abilities after the Russian space program gains more recognition, they enlist the help of a German rocket scientist. As Glenn supports the presidential candidate John F. Kennedy, Cooper hears from his old flame.

A tragic event makes the Seven realize how risky their jobs are. As Shepard faces a scandal, Glenn interferes to keep it from going public. The Seven get to vote to decide who will get the first spot in the flight order.

As Shepard, Grissom, and Glenn become the first three to be sent into space, Slayton is removed from the team because of his heart condition. As a test launch proves to be a success, the Russians make history after they send the first man into space.

Shepard's marriage is put to the test after Louise finds out about his affair. Trudy is upset after Cooper makes fun of the women's astronaut corps. As all eyes are on the team, Shepard makes history by being the first one on the team to go to space.

As Shepard's flight becomes a success, he feels that he needs a bigger challenge. Cooper and Trudy's marriage faces a difficult obstacle. As President Kennedy calls for the moon landing, Glenn sets out to make this dream a reality.
