For a while, Dexter's life is stable until he goes after a drug dealer whom Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado has also targeted. Debra faces pressure to snitch on her new partner.

Dexter and Rita are getting ready to make a decision regarding their family, while Miami police are continuously looking for Freebo, who is wanted for the murder of Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado's brother.

Dexter runs upon another criminal, a child molester this time, who makes him reevaluate his principles. Freebo is accused of a new murder, and Dexter's friendship with Miguel strengthens.

Dexter seeks to convince Rita of the seriousness of his proposal to marry her. Ramon, Miguel's brother, is looking for the murderer of his other brother, whom Dexter killed secretly one bloody night.

After learning about a husband who killed two of his wives in order to make money, Dexter follows the man to Bimini. However, Rita has a medical emergency, and Dexter goes missing.

Rita loses her job and questions if she can succeed professionally while feeling unworthy. Dexter puts his friend Miguel to the test to see whether he has figured out his secret.

Miguel and Dexter start working together, but they can't agree on who the killer's next targeted victim is. Rita learns of Miguel's infidelity, and an old friend asks Dexter to help him take his own life.

Debra gets one step closer to tracking down the Skinner, but she is unable to locate Anton. Dexter takes on the task of teaching Miguel the Code, unaware that he is fueling his partner's lust for blood.

The bond between Dexter and Miguel deteriorates even when Rita accuses Miguel of infidelity. Debra becomes angry when she learns that Anton is kidnapped by the Skinner.

Dexter competes with Miguel for power. Miguel wins Rita's love with a luxurious gift, and Debra wonders if her relationship with Anton is worth all the trouble searching for him.

Dexter decides to get rid of Miguel after he became his best friend and partner in his dark world. Rita discovers Miguel's relationship, while Debra finds new evidence of the killer's identity.

Dexter tries to calm Ramon, whose life has become complicated and unstable. Debra prepares to receive her detective badge, but she is surprised by new information that may threaten the future of her promotion.
