Evan sets out to form a new hockey team with the help of his mom, Alex, after being removed from the Mighty Ducks. Alex, who becomes coach of the new team, is forced to rent a crummy rink from its owner, Gordon Bombay, who doesn’t care for hockey.

Alex’s coaching style disappoints Evan, as the team, the Don’t Bothers, starts its first practice. With the team not having enough equipment, Alex enlists the help of Gordon, who tells her where she can find some hockey equipment that is not in use.

When the Don’t Bothers and the Mighty Ducks face off, Evan manages to score a goal with Gordon’s help, whereupon Sofi quits the Ducks following Coach T’s rebuke, and agrees to join Evan’s team pending her parents’ approval.

Sofi copies her mother’s signature to join the Don’t Bothers, then starts practicing with both teams, after which her parents find out. As Alex competes against Stephanie, her boss, in the Slap Shot Challenge, Gordon comes to her aid.

As Rob, Evan’s father, arrives unexpectedly, Alex becomes worried about the effect of this visit on Evan. Gordon kidnaps Rob, forcing him to attend Evan’s game, whereupon the Don’t Bothers win the game.

Gordon learns that he’s not invited to a gala hosted to celebrate the Ducks’ 25th anniversary, whereupon his former team members take him to crash the gala in solidarity with him. Evan considers rejoining the Ducks, which causes his teammates to feel betrayed.

Alex gathers the team to have them reconciled with Evan. Gordon helps the Don’t Bothers patch things up, as he takes them to practice at the pond where he practiced as a child, all the while he reassures Alex about her coaching skills.

As the team wins a series of successive games, Alex becomes obsessed with winning, causing the team to stress out; meanwhile, they get a shot at playing in the State Championship, which forces Evan to make a tough decision.

After Alex is fired as coach, she comforts Stephanie, who's getting a divorce. Evan asks Sofi to a party, but ends up going with Mary Joe, causing Sofi and Nick to feel jealous. As Coach T reveals a secret that disqualifies Gordon from coaching, the latter gets unexpected help.

The Ducks win the State Championship, as the Don’t Bothers were forced to forfeit due to Sofi’s injury, whereupon the two teams decide to face off at another game with much higher stakes.
