Riley, an ex-Marine, receives his former Afghani interpreter, Al, who learns that Riley is separated from his wife Vanessa, so he tries to intervene.
Riley pays Vanessa a visit to fix her plumbing, while Al learns the reasons behind Riley and Vanessa’s separation. Art helps Lizzie find her late fiancé Michael’s dog tags after she lost them.
When Al goes to the DMV to get a driver’s license, he feels ill at ease, since the female driving instructor is wearing shorts, a spectacle he isn’t used to.
As Art falls off the roof while repairing the chimney, Riley takes him to the hospital, which gives Al the opportunity to re-educate Hazel, Riley’s daughter, whom he thinks is spoiled; meanwhile, Riley finally agrees to help his father in the construction company.

After Al received roht (sweet bread) from his family in Afghanistan that went stale, Riley’s family find a place that sells it, where Al meets and falls head over heels for Ariana, an Afghani woman, who becomes outraged when she learns that he worked for the US army.
With Hazel’s birthday approaching, Al gets excited to attend his first birthday party. When Hazel learns that Al doesn’t know when his birthday is, she suggests they share the day. Riley is dismayed by Hazel’s wish to invite Freddy, but he later decides to get over his issues and invites him.
When Riley realizes that his widowed father, Art, is lonely, he and Al set out to find him a date.
As Al fails to get in touch with his family in Afghanistan, he becomes concerned; meanwhile Al and Riley clash with a client at work.
Riley and Hazel find a dog, which they bring home, to Al’s dismay; meanwhile, Art gets ready to go on his first date with Lois.
With Riley refusing to accept his due benefits from his military service, Al and Vanessa set out to change his mind.
