Ruth, the blacksmith's daughter, receives funding for her studies from Markley, an affluent cripple. He proposes to her when she gets back to their little town, but she leaves with city worker Jim Dirk, who is later murdered in an accident. To keep her newborn baby safe, Ruth is forced to accept Markley's marriage proposal.
