An elderly woman dies in a southern Italian farmhouse. Her spouse calls their sons: Rome's Raffaele, a judge fearing assassination for a political case; Naples' religious and philosophical Rocco, a correctional institute counselor for boys; and Turin's Nicola, a factory worker in labor struggles. Each of them imagines the unknown fate that awaits them.
