A wise and knowledgeable family man, Jim Anderson, lives with his no-nonsense wife, Margaret, and their children, Betty Anderson and Kathy Anderson. Whenever the children need advice about anything at all, they turn to their father because Dad knows best.
Discussions and skirmishes continue in the lives of the Anderson family, as Jim decides to leave his children to solve their problems on their own, while the family is faced with many difficult choices.

The family decides that Betty will go to university, so she realizes that it is time for independence and stays with her friends. While the arguments between Jim and Bud continue, Margaret goes into town as she gets fed up with the household chores.

In season 4, Bud is talked into joining the school committee for an annual picnic, and he continues to disagree with Jim, and Betty continues to cause problems.

Daily events continue to happen in the lives of the Anderson family, as Ralph proposes to Betty, Bud looks after a neighbor's car, and Kathy is fed up of being treated like a child.
In season 6, the family does not want to spend time with Margaret's family. Bud works in the same place as Betty's crush. Betty plans to help Bud get out of a difficult situation.
