Zawya is an art-house cinema that specialises in screening independent films targeting a small, niche market rather than the commercially-profitable mass market. The film stories may focus on the hopes, dreams and motivations of the characters in the film, rather than have the clear, goal-driven story that is popularly adopted in mainstream Hollywood films. Zawya theater also showcases films from various film festivals from the Arab region and Europe throughout the year. Hence, it contributes to spreading cinematic culture in Egypt.
