He was born in Baghdad in 1923, and before becoming a well-known artist, he achieved fame in the sports field, as he won the Iraqi championship in featherweight boxing (1938-1939) and discus throwing (1943-1944). Upon graduating from the acting department at the Institute of Fine Arts in 1945, he acted in the film Cairo-Baghdad, directed by the Egyptian Ahmed Badrakhan, among other films. In 1948, he co-directed the play The Martyrs of Patriotism. In 1954, he served as a teacher at the Institute of Fine Arts and head of the Modern Artistic Theater Troupe, which he founded in 1952. In the mid-fifties, he worked as an assistant director in the film Who Is Responsible?, then he traveled to the USA, where he obtained his BA in 1961 and his MA in 1963 from the Art Institute of the University of Chicago. Upon his return to Baghdad, he acted in the movie I See Good and served as artistic manager on several movies. He was honored in 1974 as an influential theatrical pioneer in the country's celebrations of World Theater Day in Baghdad. He also appeared as an actor in many films, such as Fayeq Gets Married. He directed prominent plays, including The Folk Epic, and the last of which was The Sheikh and the Prostitute, before his death. He died immediately after completing the last movie in which he starred, The Last Goodbye, in 1991 after a struggle with illness.
