Rateeba Rushdy was the eldest sister of the "Rushdy Sisters", which comprised her, the middle sister, Insaf Rushdy, and the youngest, Fatima Rushdy, who was the most famous and was nicknamed Sarah Bernhardt of the East. Rateeba was born in Alexandria in 1903. She began her artistic career as a singer and dancer in the twenties and worked with Sayed Darwish's troupe, then with el-Rihani's, then Abdel Rahman Rushdy's, then Ali El Kassar's, where she was the prima donna, then Amin Sedky's. In December 1929, she and her sister Insaf opened a new music hall on Fouad Street and called it Rateeba and Insaf Rushdy's Music Hall, after which she gained fame. In 1935, they opened a casino on Al-Alfi Street and presented plays in it, such as The Envious Eye, and The World Is Fine, and sketches, such as The City of Wonders, and Baghdad Market. The singer and composer Mohamed Fawzi worked in their band at the beginning of his career.
