A folk singer, born in Luxor in 1929, who sings in the Upper Egyptian dialect to the tunes of the rebab. He formed a band with his relatives and then joined the National Folklore Arts Group in the sixties, which gave him the opportunity to travel to Europe and gain fame. He also recorded the al-Hilali epic poem with his voice. Among his most famous songs are The Girl Is Fair, and The Strawberry Seller. He married 9 marriages and had 25 children, including El Rayyes Hegazy El Qenawi, who followed in his footsteps, as well as his brother, El Rayyes Shamandi. He passed away on June 17, 2004.
