In the 1970s, he starred in the hit play The School of the Misfits, which screened from 1971 to 1975, followed by a string of successful plays such as A Witness Who Hasn't Seen Anything. In television, he starred in hit series such as Tears in Bold Eyes, and Dreams of Al-Tayer Boy. In cinema, he began in supporting roles in films like Funny Thieves, after which he became a leading star. After a long absence from TV drama, he returned in 2012 with a number of series such as Nagy Attallah's Squad, and The Demons of Adly Allam. He has three children: the director Ramy Emam, actor Mohamed Emam, and Sara.
