Egyptian actor and one of the most iconic figures in Arab cinema. He was born in Mansoura on May 17, 1940, but at an early aged moved with his family to Sayida Zeinab district in Cairo, where he grew up. He earned his bachelor's degree in agriculture from Cairo University, where he became passionately involved in college theatre productions. He joined a television troupe in 1962 while still a student, and began acting in plays like Me, Him and Her.
In the 1970s, he starred in the hit play The School of the Misfits, which screened from 1971 to 1975, followed by a string of successful plays such as A Witness Who Hasn't Seen Anything. In television, he starred in hit series such as Tears in Bold Eyes, and Dreams of Al-Tayer Boy. In cinema, he began in supporting roles in films like Funny Thieves, after which he became a leading star. After a long absence from TV drama, he returned in 2012 with a number of series such as Nagy Attallah's Squad, and The Demons of Adly Allam. He has three children: the director Ramy Emam, actor Mohamed Emam, and Sara.
