An Italian director and writer, born on July 23, 1922, near Pordenone, in northern Italy. He started his career during the neo-realism movement. He was also an actor. He reached the peak of his fame in the 1960s, as his films were well received by critics, audiences, and the secular Italian left. In the seventies, he began criticizing in his films some political regimes and powers. He got an honorable mention at the 1985 Berlin Film Festival for the movie Pizza Connection. He died on March 7, 2013 in Rome.
