A Palestinian film director, born in Gaza. He is considered the first Palestinian filmmaker to make films inside the occupied Palestinian territories. He made his debut with Travel Document (1986), followed by The Shelter (1989). After he founded the company Aylol for Television and Film Production in 1990, he made his first feature film Curfew (1994), then his second feature film Haïfa (1996), which was the first Palestinian film to be officially screened at the Cannes Film Festival since the festival was founded.
In 1996, he founded the Cinema Production and Distribution Center in Ramallah, and conducted training workshops through it. He also founded the Children's Cinema Festival and the Mobile Cinema Festival in Palestine, through which he produced a number of films, including Rabab (1997) and Tension (1998). Among his other credits are Laila's Birthday (2008), Letters from Al Yarmouk (2014) and Ticket to Jerusalem (2002). His films were screened at festivals and theaters in most countries of the world, and he served as a jury member and president in Arab and international festivals.
