An American actress and comedian, was born as Caryn Elaine Johnson on November 13, 1955 in Manhattan, New York. She learned acting in New York and made her film debut in Citizen (1982). She created The Spook Show in 1983, which was transferred to Broadway. She made her Hollywood debut in The Color Purple (1985), for which she received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award. She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Ghost (1991). She is also known for Sister Act (1992) and its sequel, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit (1993).
