An American film director and producer, born on November 17, 1942 in Queens, New York. His parents were of of Italian descent. He grew up in Little Italy in Manhattan. In 1968, he earned his MA from New York University's School of Education. He is considered one of Hollywood’s best known directors. He collaborated with Robert De Niro in several films, including Taxi Driver, for which he earned the Palm d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976. In 1988, he directed The Last Temptation of Christ, which drew objection and criticism from the Vatican. He also collaborated with Leonardo DiCaprio in a number of films, including Gangs of New York (2002), and The Departed (2006), for which he won his first Academy Award for Best Directing, following multiple nominations over the years. Among his notable works are Goodfellas, The Age of Innocence, and Mean Streets. |
