Herzog has long been considered one of the greatest figures in modern German cinema, along with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Margarethe von Trotta, and Wim Wenders, among others. Legendary French director François Truffaut once said that Herzog is "the most important film director of all time." Herzog's films have received critical acclaim despite their controversial themes. His notable films include Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), and Fitzcarraldo (1982). |
