Lebanese writer and novelist who was born on November 28, 1911, in Bharsaf, Matn District. He received his Baccalaureate degree in 1928. He had an advanced command of Arabic, and he began writing for newspapers when he was 18 years old. He studied at the Jesuit College of St Joseph in Beirut and then continued his law studies at Damascus University. He wrote several novels, stories, and poems. His novel “The Mills of Beirut” is one of the top 100 Arabic novels. He is known for The Loaf (1997). He died on April 16, 1988, after a bomb blast hit the Spanish Embassy in Lebanon where he was with his son-in-law, the ambassador, and his daughter. During this blast, Tawfiq was killed instantly with his daughter, writer Samia Totonji.
