Betty Thomas graduated from Ohio University in 1969, although she had studied as a young child in a school in Chicago. However, she always felt restricted there and was in desperate need to freely express herself somewhere, where she can break free from the boundaries of closed schools, especially that she was free spirited and in love with comedy.
In her beginnings, Thomas worked as a waitress in a restaurant, as well as being a member in an improvising comedy group. She later performed several comedy sketches and then directed many plays and movies.
