Iranian screenwriter, director, and actor born in 1959 to a middle-class family in Tehran. When he was 14, he acted in amateur theater groups. He then joined the Institute of Dramatic Arts in Tehran. When the Iranian Revolution took place in 1979, he acted in several films, such...Read more as "Boycott" (1986). He directed Children of Heaven (1997) which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. He is known for the documentary "Barefoot to Herat" (2003) which tackled the lives of refugees in camps. He was one of five directors to receive an invitation from the Chinese government to create a short documentary to introduce the city of Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
