An Egyptian writer, who was born on October 23, 1924 in Cairo. He learnt about history, geology, and languages from his father who led a secret organization of the Egyptian Wafd Party during the 1919 revolution. He obtained a BA in Philosophy in 1954 from Ain Shams University. He met Shuhdi Attia El-Shafei, one of the most prominent Egyptian Marxist thinkers, who became his first political mentor.
With Shuhdi, he joined one of the communist organizations but was arrested for a year before escaping and hiding in the home of the famous artist Tahia Carioca. He left to France, where he obtained a doctorate in sociology and a state doctorate in literature from the Sorbonne University. The Arabic translation of his thesis was published under the title "Egypt’s Renaissance". He died on June 17, 2012 in a hospital in Paris, where he had been residing.
