Leo Tolstoy was born in Tula Province, Russia on September 9, 1828. He was the youngest of his four younger sisters. In 1830, Tolstoy's mother, Princess Volkonskaya, died, and his father's cousin took care of the children. When their father, Count Nikolai Tolstoy, died, only seven years later, their aunt was appointed legal guardian. Tolstoy received his primary education at the hands of French and German teachers. In 1843, he entered the program of Oriental languages at Kazan University. Tolstoy failed as a student, until Tolstoy left Kazan University in 1847, without a degree. In 1860, he wrote his first major novels on War and Peace. He wrote feature novels as War and Peace (1869), Anna Karenina (1877) and Sevastopol Sketches (1855) based on his experiences in the Crimean War. He also wrote dozens of short stories, and many famous novels. Tolstoy is still among the world's greatest writers. Tolstoy died on November 20, 1910 in Astapovo, Russia.
