She is an African American singer, born on September 7, 1949, in Newark, New Jersey. She gained major success with her smash hit single "I Will Survive" released in 1978. Her other famous hits include "I Am What I Am" (1983), and her version of the Jackson 5's "Never Can Say Goodbye" (1974).
