An Italian writer and actor, born in Sangiano, Lombardy, Italy. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1997, and is considered one of the pillars of Italian theatre, especially in the field of comedy acting and political theater, for which he became widely popular. His name was associated with the Italian Communist Party for a period of time, and when that association was severed, his theatrical critical voice did not fade. He became internationally famous in 1969, thanks to his play "Mistero Buffo", an epic about persecuted people inspired by medieval culture. Some of his credits are Lo svitato (1956) and The Betrothed (1989).
