Hugo Weaving is a British-Australian film and stage actor. He is best known for playing Agent Smith in "The Matrix" trilogy, Elrond in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, V in "V for Vendetta" (2005) and multiple roles in "Cloud Atlas" (2012). Weaving was born in Nigeria, where his parents, a teacher and a seismologist, were working in Ibadan. They left Nigeria a year later. Weaving graduated from Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Arts in 1981. Weaving made his television debut in 1984 on the Australian miniseries "The Dirtwater Dynasty." In 1989, he co-starred in "Bangkok Hilton" opposite Nicole Kidman, then in "Proof" in 1991, for which eh won the Australian Film Institute best actor award. He gained international attention with his role in "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert," and then achieved legend status when he played Agent Smith in the blockbuster hit "The Matrix" (1999) and its two sequels. He hit the fantasy epic jackpot again with Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, in which he played the masterful and wise elf Elrond. Weaving returned to the stage in November 2010 in Sydney Theatre Company's "Uncle Vanya" with Cate Blanchett and Richard Roxburgh. Weaving also appears in "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011) as Nazi the Red Skull. He currently resides in Australia with his partner of 25 years and their two children. |
