During his time there, his estranged father, whom he had only reconnected with at age 16, died of cancer, causing Butler to spiral out of control into a deep depression. He decided to change tracks from law to a career in the entertainment industry. He got his breakout role in a theater adaptation of "Trainspotting," after which he moved to Los Angeles, where he finally got roles in big movies like "Dracula 2000" (2000), "Tomb Raider 2" (2003), and "Phantom of the Opera" (2004).
