An American actor, producer and director. He was born in Mount Vernon, New York, on December 28, 1954. He earned a BA in Drama and Journalism from Fordham University. Shortly after graduating, Washington began acting in a TV movie titled Wilma (1977). His most notable works include Fences (2016), The Book of Eli (2010), Antwone Fisher (2002). He won an Academy Award twice for Best Leading Actor in Training Day (2001), and Best Supporting Actor for Glory (1989). Denzel Washington is one of Hollywood's brightest stars. He's been nominated for five Academy Awards, two of which he's won: Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Glory (1989) and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Training Day (2001). Washington was born in 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York, to a Pentecostal minister father and a beautician mother. Initially, he pursued a degree in journalism at Fordham University, but found his passion in student theater. After graduating, he enrolled in the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and moved easily into television and film roles afterwards. He snagged the coveted role of Dr. Chandler on the hit medical series St. Elsewhere (1982) which he played for six years. He won his first Oscar in 1989 for his portrayal of a runaway slave in Edward Zwick's powerful Glory. He starred in a number of big budget productions such as The Pelican Brief (1993), Philadelphia (1993), The Preacher's Wife (1996) and Courage Under Fire (1996) for which he was paid $10 million. He's been entrusted with portraying a number of real-life personalities like Malcolm X and boxer Rubin in Hurricane (1999), for which he earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He made his directorial debut in 2002 with the acclaimed Antwone Fisher. He also directed The Great Debaters (2007) and produced The Book of Eli (2010) and Safe House (2012). |
