Viola Davis is an American film, television and stage actress. She was born on her grandmother's farm, on the former Singleton Plantation in St. Matthews, South Carolina, on August 11, 1965. According to Davis, she grew up in "abject poverty and dysfunction." After getting involved in theater in high school and college, she attended Julliard in the early 1990s. She began her career in theater, eventually winning a Tony Award and a drama Desk Award for her performance in seminal black playwright August Wilson's "King Hendley II." She won another Drama Desk Award for "Intimate Apparel" (2004), and another Tony and a third Drama Desk Award for "Fences" (2010), another August Wilson play. Her film credits include "Traffic" (2000), "Antwone Fisher" (2002), and "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" (2011). For her eleven-minute performance in "Doubt" (2008) earned her an Oscar nomination, a Golden Globe nomination and the National Society of Film Critics Award for breakthrough performance. Her performance in "The Help," about black domestics in the 1950s South made memorable in part by her child-rearing mantra "you is kind, you is smart, you is important," earned her two Screen Actors Guild Awards (one for lead actress, one for ensemble), and nominations at the BAFTAs, the Oscars, and the Golden Globes. She was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2012 by Time magazine.
