He is an English writer and the managing director of the Times Literary Supplement. His career as a journalist has spanned most of his life; throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he served as the Guardian's Paris, Africa, and Middle East correspondents. In 1992, he was appointed associate editor of The Times, and in 2003, he was made managing director of the business that publishes The Times' educational supplements. The first book James has authored is titled Ocean Devil: The Life and Legend of George Hogg, which was adapted into the film The Children of Huang Shi (2008).
