American author born on 6 December 1956 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, US. He earned a degree in art history from Harvard University in 1974, specializing in Japanese art, then earned an MA in Japanese history from Columbia University in 1890. He wrote the bestselling novel Memoirs of a Geisha, which was adapted into a 2005 film of the same name that earned several accolades including three Academy Awards.
