Russel Brand is a British actor and writer who was born in Grays, Essex, England on June 4, 1975. When he was only six months old, his parents got divorced and he was then raised by his mother. He had to live with relatives for most of his childhood because his mother was diagnosed with cancer. With all those inconveniences and his father’s rare visits, Brand’s childhood wasn’t easy. He left home at the age of 16. Russel was accepted by the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre in 1991 but was later expelled because of bad behavior and drug use. Russel was addicted to illegal drugs and heroin. He later went to the Drama Centre London, from which he was also expelled. He then decided to switch from acting to comedy. The Englishman appeared in many TV series and stand-up shows, including his one-man show about his heroin addiction. When he worked with Jason Segel on Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), he gained worldwide attention. In the following few years, he worked on Arthur, Despicable Me, and Hop.
His writing debut My Booky Wook: A Memoir of Sex, Drugs and Stand-up was very successful in the UK. When it was released in the USA in 2009, it was on the New York Times’s best-selling list for 5 weeks.
Brand married pop star Katy Perry in 2010. Fourteen months later, he filed for a divorce, and it was granted in 2012.
