Hunter won the 1993 Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in (The Piano), which also won her the Golden...Read more Globe in 1993 for the same category and the Australian Film Institute award in 1993 for Best Actress in a Lead Role, and won the Emmy twice. Hunter was born in Conyers, Georgia, in the United States of America, and is the seventh and youngest daughter. Her parents encouraged her to start acting at a young age; her first role was Sophie in (The Burning). In 1976, she went Carnegie Mellon University to pursue a degree in Drama. After graduating in 1980, she went to New York where she met the playwright "Beth Henley" in one of the lifts and landed several roles in his plays such as: (Crimes of the Heart) and (The Miss Firecracker Contest).
