A Danish film director, producer, writer, born in Copenhagen, Denmark. At the age of eleven, he began making his first film after receiving a camera as a gift. He then continued to make independent films during his high school studies until he began his studies at the National Film School of Denmark. Among his first public experience was the short film The Orchid Gardener (1978). In 1984, he released his first feature film, The Element of Crime, after which his works continued. In 1992, he co-founded a film production company with producer Peter Aalbæk Jensen. His credits include Melancholia (2011), The Early Years: Erik Nietzsche Part 1 (2007), and Dancer in the Dark (2000), for which he won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
