An Italian director and screenwriter, born in Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. He was sent by his family to learn in Catholic schools. Since his childhood, he was influenced by circus shows and traveling comic theater, an influence that appeared in his movie La Strada (1954). He worked in several jobs before turning to cinema. He began his career as a journalist and cartoonist. He made his directorial debut by co-directing Variety Lights (1950). Most of his films are classified among the classics of world cinema, such as La Dolce Vita (1960), for which he won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1960, and 8½ (1963), which is considered among the 100 most important films of all time. He married Italian actress Giulietta Masina in 1943 and they remained together until his death on October 31, 1993.
