She studied at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art for a year before moving to New York to study there at the Feagin School of Drama and Radio. She was married to American actor Richard Cromwell for a year and then they divorced; three years later, she married producer Peter Shaw, and they remained together until Shaw died in 2003. She was nominated for an Oscar 3 times in her career. Her most notable works are The Manchurian Candidate, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Beauty and the Beast, and Anastasia.
