Paul Thomas Anderson is an American film director-scriptwriter-producer who was born on 1970 in Los Angeles - California.
At the age of twelve, Anderson was involved in filmmaking and started making films on his father’s video camera. He began writing as a teenager.
Anderson began his career as a production assistant on television movies, music videos and game shows in Los Angeles and New York. His first short film was “Cigarettes and coffee (1993)”, the film was screened at the 1993 “Sundance Festival” Shorts Program and he decided to expand the film into a feature length film and was subsequently invited to the 1994 Sundance Institute - Sundance filmmakers' Lab. The Sundance success was his gateway to make more, more in many films, among which was “Boogie Nights (1997), “Magnolia (1999), and “There will be blood (2007). Anderson is a member of the first generation of SELF-TAUGHT FILMMAKERS, much like Tarantino, Soderbergh, Linklater, Russell, and Jonze, who learned the craft not in film schools, but by viewing thousands of movies on video. He learned about filmmaking by watching films by the filmmakers he liked, reading books and magazines about the technical stuff, and watching films accompanied by director’s audio commentary. Anderson received many awards, like; 2008, Silver Bear for Best Director at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival for “There will be blood” and 2000, the Golden Bear at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival for Best Film for “Magnolia”. He also won the Best Director Award at the 55th Festival de Cannes in 2002 for the film “Punch-drunk love”. He also received 5 Academy Awards nominations and other 14 nominations.
Anderson is currently the partner of Maya Rudolph, they have two daughters; Pearl Minnie (born 2005) and Lucille (born 2009).
