Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican film director, screenwriter, producer and novelist. His highly regarded works span the genres of magical realism, sci-fi and horror. He is the mastermind behind critically acclaimed, Spanish language fantasy works such as “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), which earned him a BAFTA and a Goya awards, and nominations at the Academy Awards and Cannes, “Devil’s Backbone” (2001). Del Toro’s works are resonant for their political implications, as well as his fantastical imagery that connects Catholicism and power to monsters. He considers the horror genre inherently political: “Much like fairy tales, there are two facets of horror. One is pro-institution, which is the most reprehensible type of fairy tale: Don't wander into the woods, and always obey your parents. The other type of fairy tale is completely anarchic and antiestablishment.” Del Toro has also produced and directed a number of Hollywood action films like “Blade II” (2002), “Hellboy” (2004) and “Pacific Rim” (2013). Del Toro wrote the screenplays for “The Hobbit” trilogy, and executive produced the critically acclaimed 2013 horror “Mama" starring Jessica Chastain. |
