A British-Irish author, born in Poole, Dorset, United Kingdom. He studied at Sherborne School and then studied German literature for a year at the University of Bern. He went to Lincoln College, Oxford, and studied modern languages from 1956 to 1958, and he later worked as a teacher at Eton College from 1959 to 1964.
He became a member of the British Foreign Office, second secretary at the British Embassy in Bonn, and political consul in Hamburg. He wrote his first novel in 1961, and after that, he wrote many novels, some of which have been adapted into films, such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965). He appeared in the movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011). He is known for Tailor Soldier Spy (2011). He passed away on December 12, 2020 in Truro, Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.
