Greek director who was born on June 11, 1922 in Limassol, Cyprus. His father sent him to London to become a lawyer. He joined the BBC World Service to present programs on the Greek language. He abandoned his father's dream and pursued filmaking. He joined the Old Vic school, but didn't achieve success at working in the UK cinema, so he returned to Greece. In 1953, he made his directorial debut with Windfall in Athens. He is known for Zorba the Greek (1964), for which he was nominated for 3 Oscars. He died on July 25, 2011 (age 89) in Athens, Greece.
