An Italian screenwriter, born in Rome, Italy, to Sicilian parents. During his high school studies, one of the teachers in one of his classes was director Pier Paolo Pasolini, whom he became his assistant after his graduation in two films, The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964), and The Hawks and the Sparrows (1964), then he made his way into the world of screenwriting. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Life Is Beautiful (1997). His other credits include Pinocchio (2002) and The Tiger and the Snow (2005). He died on July 17, 2013.
