An Iranian film director, writer and producer, born in 1972 in Khomeyni Shahr, Isfahan Province. He obtained a BA in Fine Arts from Tehran University, and then an MA in the same specialization from Tarbiat Modares University. He began his cinematic career in 1986 through the Iranian Young Cinema Society in Isfahan, and from 1986 to 2002 he made six short films and two series for the Iranian national television. His work was not limited to directing, as he also wrote most of his work that followed. The year 2002 was a turning point in his career, as he wrote the screenplay for the movie Low Heights. As for his most famous film, A Separation, it won numerous awards at many festivals, including the Golden Bear Award for Best Film at the Berlin International Film Festival, as well as the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film in 2012, making it the first Iranian film to win both awards. His most notable films include About Elly (2009), and the Salesman (2016).
