Salma El-Sharkawy |
Mexican writer, born in Mexico City. After graduating from a Catholic school in 1968, she attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to study Spanish literature after giving birth to her first child. She started out as a writer for the Secretariat of Public Education (Mexico), creating cartoons based on classic literature and events from Mexican history before focusing on creating educational materials for young readers. The film El imperio de la fortuna (1986) was their first joint project after she met director Arturo Rebstein. Her works include Deep Crimson (1996), The Queen of the Night (1994) and Love Lies (1989). She received the Salvador Toscano Award, awarded by the Mexican National Film Foundation in 2013.
