A South African singer, songwriter, actress, and civil rights activist, born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Since the beginning of the 1950s, she has become widely known for her songs. She supported the persecuted people of her country and race, so she was exiled and stripped of her citizenship in 1956. After her asylum in the United States, she joined the singing group the Manhattan Brothers, and she became known as Miriam. Her voice was also considered one of the most important voices against the apartheid regime, and she returned to South Africa following the release of Nelson Mandela, who became the first black president of South Africa. Her credits include Mama Africa (2011) and Amok (1983).
