He began his career as a theater director for plays like The Cherry Orchard, Troilus and Cressida, and Richard III. In 1999, he directed his first feature film, American Beauty, followed by Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), Away We Go (2009), and Skyfall (2012).
